Where is the Internet2 (I2) technology going and how can small colleges and universities benefit from I2 technology? I2 is an advanced high-volume, high-speed network initiative. I2 employs an Internet Protocol (IP) – over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) – over Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) platform for enabling real-time teleresearch and interactive distance learning applications with Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. The I2 project also supports telemedicine initiatives and fosters telecollaborative research among members of computational, medical, research, scientific, and academic communities. In addition to ensuring always-on networking connectivity, I2 enables participating institutions to reserve high quantities of bandwidth at specified times for scientific research and/or educational investigations.
